Yes they are compatable..but in a 20 gal tank the trig is bound to get frisky...it may start to nip at the lion out of palyfulness or boredom...get a larger tank to avoid any problems....otherwise they would make great tank mates.

: I was wondering if i could keep a small 2-3 inch clown trigger with a 4-5 inch volitan lionfish for a while in a 20 gallon until they outgrow it? Or i could buy a larger trig. about the same size as the lion. The real question is: Can lions be kept with triggers?
