I would suggest NOT starting with a saltwater tank. Get yourself a good freshwater setup, and if you can take care of that for a year with few to no problems, THEN consider getting into saltwater. You may discover that you hate the work involved with fishkeeping, or that you like freshwater fish better, or that you dont have the time or money to keep up with a fishtank, and its MUCH less expensive to keep a freshwater system than a saltwater system, simply because freshwater fish dont have the high demand care requirements that most saltwater fish do.

To answer your question though, yellow tangs, while considered semi aggressive, are typically a good "beginner" saltwater fish, yes. Theyre fairly hardy and tend to stay fairly healthy, though they, like all members of the tang or surgeonfish family, are prone to oodinium and cryptocaryon.
