:I was told small amounts of aquarium salt are good for my swordtails...problem is the box does not say how often to add salt only how much. ANy suggestions on this?

First off if you have anything in your tank besides brackish water or livebearing fish, then I don't recommend you add salt to the tank, and depending upon what livebearing fish you have would depend upon the type of salt. Since swordtails can do fine in either brackish or freshwater, then aquarium salt if fine for them. Only add it after doing water changes, and then only add enough for the amount of water you take out. Salt does not evaporate from the tank with the water and filters don't remove it, so adding salt at anytime other than when doing water changes will cause it to build up.

Now if you have guppies or mollies then I highly recommend you use sea salt, especially with mollies, since they are brackish water fish and don't do so well in pure fresh.
