:I was wondering if it is possible for my female marigold swordtail to have had a miscarriage. It looks as though she was pregnant for a while, I noticed a gravid spot, and she was gaining weight. Now it seems as if the spot is turning lighter. Could it be that she is absorbing her fry? Or is she still pregnant? The spot has expanded a bit farther towards her anal fin than her stomach now, so I'm not sure if that means she is still pregnant. I'm still waiting on seeing fry in the tank, I've had her separated for quite a while, anticipating her to give birth!
Swordtails will give birth about once a month, if she doesn't appear to be pregnant anymore then there's a good chance she gave birth and then ate them before you had a chance to find them. Also since they are real little any that she wasn't able to catch will hide real well, sometimes they will even wedge themselves in the gravel making it almost impossible to see them. It's not unheard of for livebearers to miscarry and it could have well happened with your swordtail, especially if she's new to the tank or under a lot of stress.
