hmmm.......they even at that small size,they could use a bigger tank.

You could be killing them by playing with the ph like that. Just use normal tapwater, unless you are dealing with very delicate fish...also, tanks should be kept warm(you probably know this already) at 80-85 degrees for most species of snakehead.
