Mystery snails ARE apple snails.
There are several species, of which coloration is variable.
Most aquarium stores refer to the black snails as mystery snails, and the yellow as apple snails. They are in fact all apple snails, and may or may not even be the same species.

They do have separate sexes, and need a mate to reproduce. They can also switch sexes if need be.
