Fish per gallon rules are not the most important factor to snails, filtration and water quality is!

As far as food, they eat a lot! Definately feed them more than what grows on the tank, they will not breed without food. Is give mine veggies from the fridge. Just microwave for a few seconds, and attach to a clip, or an elastic around a rock works well. I feed carrots mostly, but include whatever I have that is around. Depending on the species you have, they might not eat vegetation until it starts to rot.

Breeding: yes, they have separate sexes, but they can switch as need be. They are able to re-produce at approx 1.5 inches, and can have hundreds of babies per clutch.
