Bubble-eyed goldfish are grotesque little sweethearts that have a large water-filled sac under each eye, a round sausage body, eyes that look upward, and tiny fins. They cannot swim "fast" at all. In a community tank of goldfish, they stay at the bottom and prefer to hide in tank corners and among rocks, which is what one two-inch bubble-eyed did recently. Unfortunately, this time the "rock" was one of my bigger snails. The bubble-eyed was cornered and couldn't move quickly enough to evade the large mouth that latched onto it. Fortunately, I picked up the snail and it dropped the traumatized fish. Unfortunately, two small bubble-eyes had already been partially eaten before I figured out that they hadn't died first! Now I've divided the tank. That last bubble-eye may yet die from its trauma. It was a healthy but VERY SLOW moving fish. And the snail is a big, always-hungry mover!
