They do need a partner. While "mystery" (aka apple snail sp.) can switch sexes depending on how many females and males are around, they can only be one sex at one time, and cannot fetalize themselves. A popular saying to this effect is like you try to stick your elbow in your ear. :)

They are also active mostly at night, so generally, you will not see them mating. If they are at leat 1.5" across, odds are they are mating, and if your water quality is good, you should see eggs soon. I purchased 5 smaller snails, and once they grew a little, and got used to the place, there was 5 egg clutches within 2 weeks. Hundreds upon thousands of possible snails :)
