You really should have a large sump with a very good size skimmer for any type of canister filters isn`t good enough for a larger tank, at first i didn`t realize it that you said that you might have a 404 Fluval those canisters aren`t for a larger system, i hope you get back here in a flash not months later after you setup. See at first i didn`t take in that you really thought of having an canister, please if you do change it as soon as you can to a sump, or your success rate will be poor.

::: Hey Buddy thanks for the help! Sorry i couldn`t get back to you right away, i haven`t been on for a while. I will just forget the grouper but i like Huma triggers so it will be no problem to get one instead and i`ll probably forget the lion fish too i don`t realy want to risk gettin stung. The power dosn`t go out much here but when it does (maybe once a year) it might stay out for more than 3 hours. if worse comes to worse i could always hook it up to our gas genorator. I`m planning on having a canopy and a large 40 gallon sump underneath with the heater, large skimmer (Berlin XL), the filtration (a Fluval 404 and a FilStar FC722), and the UV hooked up to it. Would you recomend using a fluidized bed filter too for extra bio-filtration? I`ll use argonite sand and probably end up putin in some live rock cause i think a bare tank is so depresing,i like to simulate their natural surroundings as much as posible cause then the fish are happier and act more natural. would it be better to leave out the liverock because it isn`t part of their natural surroundings? If no how much rock? What kind of lighting is best? Floresent? Thats all i can think of right now, thanks alot again! Talk to ya later.

::::::: A miniatus grouper should be added last, they are very territory predators ( ambushers ). The Bamboo shark grows to 2 feet ( +inches ) but they don`t swim around much, now you asked would they be compatable at the same size, why? is this grouper 7" or more? if so you would need to get a fish of size that can withstand the grouper`s attacks, for the bamboo shark wouldn`t have a chance, not unless you have another tank and you take the grouper and place him in that tank for afew months to break up his territorial claim. I myself have done this with triggers and so, but still later you would have to monitor the grouper`s ativities once you place him back in this main tank, all in all, it`s risky. So is this tank already setup? it sounds from your UV question that it isn`t in the works as of yet, if not setup yet, please get a very good skimmer, for mamny people don`t understand this but the skimmer is the heart of your aquarium`s life support and yes, you do need a UV but you would need to get the larger UV ( 30 watt`s ). And the lionfish will be of no problem with any fish just as long as any fish isn`t of size for a meal. But what do you mean by defeat the purpose live rocks? If it`s about having a UV with live rocks, then no problem, but if you mean that question in another type of way then please state it clear to what your question is, in the clearest possible way. ::::::::I have a 270 gallon 30x30x72 inches and would like to keep banded bamboo sharks in it. Would they be compatable with either a miniatus grouper of the same size or a volitan lionfish? If not i`ll just keep one male and two female bamboo sharks. Also I`m planing on using UV sterilization as part of my filtration and was wondering, would that defeat the purpose of liverock? Thanks!

::::: Fine but i would advise you to select another fish other then that grouper, maybe a like to think of a trigger, like either a Humu or Niger, the Humu will grow to just under 10" and the Niger will grow as large as 19" but both are mild tempered, but the miniatus grouper grows over 16" and is a very aggressive fish. But as for sand, just go with the aragnite sand, a 2" to 3" bed. But you say this tanks is 72" long, thats only six feet, with bamboo sharks you dont need a deep tank, 24" be fine, these sharks don`t swim much you know, and they grow 2ft +, so if you still want these 3 bamboo sharks then you need to really research your idea on a grouper, you need to understand something here, the more large fishes you have, the more waste they produce, and in this your skimmer never better fail to operate (it won`t happen for if you cleant the skimmer or so, but if you have a power-out for a long period then i`ll say worry, but if any power out for few hours or so, after the power back on you might want to make a water change to help refresh your oxygen and remove waste ) or they will choke to death, and the other thing you need to learn is about nitrate, try to keep it no higher then 50, see many hobbyist confuses nitrates as toxic, but it`s not, what higher nitrates do really is prevents your fishes from a normal growth rate ( size ) and some could say it also affects there life span. I like you to watch out with the aquarium store you will deal with, many the stores will tell you, you can have all what you posted here, for many of them it`s the sales. with these sharks and lionfish you wont need a cover, but your tank will have a canopy and its rarely that a bamboo shark might jump out. OOPS!! i`ve just made an error :(( either way you will have a canopy, right? so if you have no cover your lights needs to be installed in the canopy and on one side the canopy you will have a cooler fan. if you don`t understand this just post it and i`ll explan in detail. Ok tomorrow night i`m baby sitting but ill be on after i get back home. And one more thing, maybe you want to go to the aquarium store you will be dealing with and take a look see at there display tanks. ><{{{{"> Buddy
