I just returned from salt LAke,
and i brought some water and sand samples home,
WHen i tested the water, it showed ph around 10.0
and no2 no3 and nh4+ were undetectable.
I would think that brine shrimp would create ammonia,
and therefore nitrogen fixing bacteria would be present?

:Ironically, I lived in Utah for 12 years before moving 2 years ago. The Great Salt Lake is a very unique ecosystem with a very high salinity, unfortunately, the only aquatic creatures that inhabit the lake are brine shrimp. I would tend to believe that sand from the lake will do nothing positive for your tank, and the only specimens that you could find there are brine shrimp or perhaps a crab. You'd be much better off just using the live sand you have and adding some quality argonite product. The organisms already living in your live sand and rock will move to any sand you place in the tank, so if you add sand and give it some time it will all be the same down the road.
