Posted by Ghetto on July 01, 2001 at 14:40:53: I have a pond and a biofilter. I tested the pH, it is around 8. The ammonia and Nitrogen are indetectable. The water is crystal clear. I have no potted lillies or other plants with soil in the pond. I have tried water hyacinth, water lettuce, hornwort, and hydrilla. Everytime the same thing happens. Upon introduction, a quick growth spurt for the plants and then they soon die. I set some plants up in a separate tank to see if the fish and turtles were to blame for this, but even these protected plantsa died off. Everyone tells me that the plants take up nutrients and wastes from the turtles & fish and this is how they grow. Well, not for me. They die. I wonder if it could be that I have not enough nutrients in the water for proper growth. One thing I did notice was that in my seperate tank, after the plants looked dead, I through in a half a bag of no float cypress bark mulch to see what would happen. The hydrilla seemed to come back to life showing lush green growth. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I am thinking of soaking some peat moss and then dumping it in my pond to see if that helps the plants. Any advice would be much appreciated. thanks, Ghetto Child
