We built a filter for our pond, and it works fairly well as long as the pond is not too big. This is what we did:
1. take off the grating where the built in little filter is
2. Get a bucket, about 10L or so with a lid
3. Punch holes in the lid, and cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket the size of the hose
4. now we used char coal chunks in the bottom, with sheet of filter material on top, anything similar would probably work, or even different fill.
5. then put the lid on, and atach a hose from the pump to the hole in the bottom of the bucket and put it in the water
this worked surprisingly well for our pond which is about 3mx1.5m and about 2.5ft deep in the center
ive seen similar plans for filters in books using pebles and such. if you want to use that as fill, make sure to build a through flow pipe. this is because the water will filter slower and you want to maintain pressure for fountains etc. all you need for that is a T shaped connecter
one end of the T should be at the bottom as before and the other should have a hose to the top of the bucket. I have never tried this way but ive seen instructions in a book for it.
