Normally I would respond with a resounding no to putting a fantail, or any roundbodied goldfish into an outdoor pond. But in your case I would think that if this is the only option available it is one you must choose. They really need to be in at least a 20 or 30 gallon tank with adequate filtration...are you sssuuuurrreeee you can't squeeze one in somewhere?!? Fantails do not do well in ponds, they cannot compete with the faster, slim bodied and singletailed fish at feeding time. And often they are chased and nipped at, and they can die from the sheer exhaustion of being chased. They also are fairly easy pickings to predators because they do not swim quickly, and what you were told about temperature fluctuations is correct as well. Deeper water is hard on their swim bladders as well, so they are more prone to floating troubles in the pond. All those things said, some people have no trouble with them in ponds, others do. All things considered, it is not the optimal thing for them, but when the other is most likely death from being in the bowl at least you will know that you tried to give them a happy and healthy home. Sorry I can't be a bit more optimistic for you.

:Hello, I was hoping someone here could give me some advice. I have recently found out that to my horror, I am accidentally killing my failtailed goldfish that I keep in a bowl! (Apparently...they cannot be healthy in a bowl and I do not have the room for a tank) I have two of these GFs and was hoping to let them free in my mom's large outdoor pond for a healthier lifestyle. I was informed that they may not do well depending on the water temp, does anyone here know anything about this? We live in Florida and so even during the winter the pond doesn't get very cold at all. Do you think my two small fantails would be able to survive? Also, would the larger kois and gf already in there eat them?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
