Hi,
I'm 14 years old and live in Hawaii and am a fish and pond enthusiast. I have 3000+ pond with a variety of fish ranging from a Chinese catfish to koi. Anyway, this large pond our family dug on our own had inefficient filtration for about two years. The pond hasn't been clear for a while and my filter system isn't working. What do I need to do get that darn water clear and make my filter do their job?
Here's what I got:
I have three 30 gallon tubs that takes the output of a Sequence 6000 G.P.H. pump. The flow is probably only about 2500 though from instant clogging of debris that get's caught by the prime pot and inside strainer I made which attaches on the input pipe inside the pond. The boxes are filled 1/3 with crushed coral and gravel as of now (filter pads ripped apart after daily cleanings). Above the filter boxes are a cross of 1" PVC pipes with holes that spurt water across the media in the filter.
I have a scarce amount of plant coverage (edges lined with taro plants) after all the floating Hycinith died out.
I've tried large water changes but they haven't done much and the water clarity remains horrible.
So what could I do to my filters to get them more efficient and get out all the waste in my pond? And also what could I do to stop my pump from getting slowed down from clogging?
All the gravel and crushed coral in the filter boxes are sludged out to the max with waste. There is a whole layer of thick brown sludge and think my pond is too dirty to clear.
Well, anyone who read through this whole post THANK YOU! Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated!
ALOHA!
