You didn't say what type of filter your using.
If your using a filter like an Aquaclear cut the intake tubes so that they are a good distance above the tank floor.
Divert the filters return, you can use a section of PVC pipe placed horizonatly with a lot of small holes drilled into it so that it doesn't distrub the bottom.
What I am currently using is a 40 gallon tank with snails, crayfish, guppies, and some invertabrits is no filter at all.
I have a lot of plants, mainly Sylvinia they are great oxygenators and filters by themselves. Water is cystal clear and fish and snails are breeding like crazy, it has been been like this for 7 months. Just provide a good plant grow light.
