: I'm looking into buying a pump and building my own filter for my snapping turtle. I'll probably go about getting a big stock tank or something for it. I know it's not a true POND but I figured this would be the best place to ask. The size would prolly be around 100+ gallons and I basically need to know if anyone has any plans I can look at so I can create my own filter? My dad is plant manager at a company that makes pumps so he can get me one for cheap. Any advice? I'd need to know pump sizes and everything cuz I'm TOTALLY new at this. Thanks!

I Have two small alligator snappers in a 150 gallon stock tank (half full). I made a very simple filter that I use with a 300 gph pump. I took a plastic food storage container (12"X 8"X 6"), drilled many 3/4" holes in the bottom, and a one inch hole in the lid. I cut a wire mesh (for a screen door)to ft the box with a couple inches extra. I put the mesh over the bottom to cover the holes. in ther bottom I put a generous supply of ammonia and carbon chips. Over that Iput A 100 micron filter media, and then a course, cut-to-fit fabric media. I attached the plumbing to the filter lid through the hole in the top. I stacked a couple of concrete blocks above water level on the side of the stock tank and used two small bricks to set the filter on (with the holes on the bottom unobstructed). The pump pushes the water to the top of the filter where it falls through the fillter media, and comes out the bottom all clean. My pum seems to work very well and keeps the water crystal clear.
Good luck
