Water Heater

Hey guys Im going to be keeping africa cichlids in my pond here in So.CALI and I need to keep the water at around 74 temp.. considering using a electric water heater that you use for the home a 4 gallon one.. with a thermostat to turn the pump on when the temp fall at about 72 or so.. any of you ever tried it? I mean the water heater is 149 bucks alot cheaper then some of the takless one ive looked at for the pond.
