Depending on the type of platy, you can sometimes see a pregnancy spot behind the anal fin. The only problem with this is that some types of males have this, and some of the darker types it won't show.Sometimes the male will chase her for a few weeks before.
There are other things that can cause a swelled belly. Parasites, as well as high ammonia and nitrites, can cause this. Is the fish rubbing on the bottom, eating, sitting in one spot?
If it is pregnancy, and you do see her giving birth, they will be quite noticable as babies. You may want to consider moving her to a smaller tank till she gives birth, or a breeding net. If not able to, either turn down the filter, or maybe put a cut off peice of old, clean nylons over the tube, so they won't get sucked into the box. If they do get sucked into the box, don't panic, they will survive, just take them out.
"As for feeding them, if they are in a seperate tank, and you have a room that can stand the stink, you can try to make infursia. If not, there are foods in your in your local pet store specifically made for babies. Or you may try to crush up the adult food real small (basically to a powder)
Platies are quite good at making babies. YOur female should go back to normal behavior after.
Hope it turns out alright!
:I recently purchased 2 platies (1 male and 1 female). The female looks pregnant. I bought them on the 9th. Now for some questions:
:How can I tell if she is pregnant?
:What will she do when giving birth?
:What will she behave like after birth?
:What should I feed the fry?
:How often to they breed?
:ANY thoughts or suggestions about the Platies Breeding is appreciated. Thanks so Much!
