Animals of different species in the same genus can hybridize

Swordtails and platys are in the same genus, and readily breed and produce offspring. They have done it in my tank (before I found out it could happen, and separated them - no LFS I trade with will accept hybrid fish, and instructed me to use the hybrids for "feeders.") I know others who had it happen.

Guppies and mollies are in the same genus, and theoretically could, but nobody has ever confirmed for me that offspring have been produced, and I have never seen any pics of the fry, so I will wait for confirmation.

Your guppies may not stop harassing your platys, but no offspring should come from a cross between two different genera.
