:Today, I bought an aquarium along with 6 tetras and 2 platies. One is pregnant. I have no idea what to do. How can I make the mother comfortable? When the babies arrive, do I need to separate them from their mom, or just the other fish, or would they be ok with the tetras? What would I feed them? Is there anything else not included here that I should do for the mother or babies? Much help needed! Thanks!
What size tank did you buy when you got the fish? That is an awful lot of fish to start the cycling of a new tank unless your tank is over 55-gallons, and even then that's a lot of fish. It won't take long for the ammonia levels to rise to very dangerous levels. I would suggest you take several fish back to the store and only start out with one or two at the most, and then take stocking very slow. Otherwise you are going to have some very sick fish and more than likely quite a few deaths before the tank is fully cycled. The stress alone from a cycling tank could cause your platy to give birth to dead fry, or even cause her to have them prematurely, at worst it would kill her.
