...CO2 injection, then here are some simple guidelines for success with live plants on a small scale:

1) use shallow tanks only, like 10 gallons or 20 long
2) keep your lights on at least 12 hours a day. I use a $3 timer from WalMArt to turn them on and off at the same time each day, so I can't forget (and remember on my way to work)
3) don't over-aerate the water (no extra bubble walls or decorations that bubble) and don't set your filter on the strongest setting, it eliminates all the CO2 produced by your fish, and your plants need it
4) use small gravel and mix some laterite in, according to the instructions on the box
5) buy some plant tabs or plant fertilizer, and use it

initially, stick with easy plants, live Java moss, Java fern, anacharis and hornwort. After you achieve success with them, try some new plants!
