Bettas and plants

I posted the below message in July. Since then the banana plant has died. I tried using some fungus eliminator but that did not work. Shortly thereafter the betta fish got some white fluffy stuff on it. I took the banana plant out of the bowl, because I thought maybe it was killing the fish. I changed the water for the fish and the banana plant quite regularly, but eventually they both died. I have since gotten another betta, but have not gotten another banana plant. This betta has been doing fine. Is it not possible to keep plants in with a betta fish? Thanks for any help.
