I'm having a huge problem with hair algae. Previously, I had an outbreak of the long, single-stranded, bright green variety. That was brought under control with frequent removal, water changes, and a new phos-x bag in the canister filter, but now a new variety has taken over. This new invader is dark olive green and branching and is proliferating so fast I can't keep up!!! I've just returned from a three day visit with family to find my tank infested with the stuff!!! The tank is a twenty gallon hex. Because it's twice as tall as it is wide (nearly two feet tall), I'm using a lot of light (96 watts). I feel the tank needs additional light to penetrate the added depth. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm seriously considering using an algicide. If anyone has any advice regarding which product is most effective while being least detrimental to plants, I'd certainly appreciate that information as well. Thanks!
