I'm not sure whether that idea of "growing to the size of the tank" thing works with piranahs, but please know that it's a half-truth. A fish that "grows to the size of the tank" means that it's growth is stunted...outside. Inside, the internal organs continue growing and get squeezed. You'll end up with a fish in poor health who doesn't live very long.
I don't own piranahs, but I'd encourage you to search around and get as much information as you can before making this decision. www.fishprofiles.com is another site that you might find helpful. Good luck.
