It sounds like you had your heart set on the tessalata! I've heard people say that you only need a skimmer on a reef tank, but I disagree. Carnivores, especially lionfish and eels seem to better with them. I think DeanR's advice is very sound, buy the best skimmer you can afford and you won't be sorry. I'd think you'd want to use as much filter as you could fit on your 10 gallon tank, especially with a fish that creates as much waste as an eel does. I'm not an "expert" like some of the other people about seem to be, but that's my opinion, for what it's worth. Good luck!
:You will always need a skimmer, and a good one at that. Eels, especially ones that get as big as yours produce alot of waste that will quickly foul the water. Eels are very hardy but will eventually stop eating if water conditions deteriorate due to excess waste. Dont skimp on the skimmer, spend a couple hundred bucks and get a good one from the beginning, its the single most important purchase you will buy for your tank.
::Day two was much better. i got some shrimp for him this morning and it didnt last 3 seconds. what does this eel need to have a balanced diet? i have an order in for some squid. how long till i need a protien skimmer on this 10 gal? i have a small hanging filter with carbon and a bio wheel. is that giving him enough oxygen or do i need an air stone?
:::i just got an 8" tesselata. i put him in my 90 gal with a 5" panther grouper and a large lion. :( they both started trying to eat him. all they see is a little head and dont know there is seven more inches to him. i got him out and put him in a 10 gal by himself. just till he gets bigger to hold his own. then he will be moved to a 235 gal corner tank. he acts hungery and all i have at the moment is frozen krill that i put on a chopstick and tried to feed him. he comes and touches it with his nose but wont take it. i have read past messages about how often to feed but what do you guys recommend feeding a little guy like this? i always freak out until my new fish (or eels) start eating. by the way, my lfs guy knows someone with access to a 4000 gal tank (give or take) that this little guy will move to when he goes for my arm and everything else, lol.
