aquarium salt is usually NaCl only....

...sea salt usually has many of the other 88 naturally occuring elements in it. It is necessary in marine and brackish tanks, and preferable in freshwater tanks, too (IMO.) It is more expensive, but if you are talking about one tablespoon per 5 gallons, the cost difference is negligible and it is worth the added expense. Try it for a few months and see.

Incidentally, in the 30+ years I have been keeping aquariums, I have used aquarium salt, sea salt, un-iodized table salt, and iodized table salt in my livebearer tanks, and all worked acceptably, no matter what others have told you. The iodine made no difference (it is certainly present in naature.) I just prefer the marine salts, because of the trace minerals present.
