he is mating with her. that is wat they do, the male swims up next to the female and sort of sniffs her, then does his business. is she the only female in the tank with him?? if so he is probably really stressing her out so i'd recommend getting at least one more female. also, what to look for when she is pregnant is the belly being more of a square shape.
