:substitute for their own family (school) of fish of their own species. Same with corys...groups of 3.
:they will sometimes buddy up...but not in the same way, they don't interact in the same way, and if you want your fish to be as healthy as possible you need to provide them with the habitat that creates the greatest sense of security and well being for them.

::i know loaches are schooling fish and i do intend on getting one more in my 55 gallon, but i heard that they will tag along with cory cats *i have one* and plecos *i have two*. I was just wondering if this is true>>>???<<<

I've got three juvenile clowns in my tank and they're always together in my 55G. I've got 9 cories to help with clean up as well... and one pleco. I wholeheartedly recommend getting more cories, since they are a schooling type as well. Plecos I hear get semi-aggressive towards each other if more than one adult are present, so I'd keep a watch on them.
My clowns don't seem to mind sharing any of the four clay pots I have scattered in my tank with the other bottom feeders, but I don't see them chumming together with other species much at all. That may well be attributed to having multiples of three for all my "group" fish.
