I have 5 Kuhlis in a 20 gallon tank with a large firemouth. My kuhlis swim around the tank very actively sometimes. The first few times I saw this I was worried that something was wrong with the water and the kuhlis were uncomfortable or unhealthy, but the more I see it The more I see it the more I think this is perfectly normal activity for kuhlis in groups of three or more.
My heater broke a few months ago in this tank. The water temp dropped to close to 50F and my kuhlis were bleached white. they recovered their color after the tank recoverd it's tempature.
The kuhlis seem to prefer a fine sand substrate. the tank is divided into two sections, one end with a gravel substrate and the other with sand. The kuhlis stay mostly in the sand end, somtimes burying themselves entirely in the sand.
and lastly because of the amount of time they spent digging around in the sand or gravel, you should choose a gravel without sharp edges, or the kuhlis with rub their noses raw.
happy kuhlis are very fun to watch.
