I just based it thru my experience since I have bought new pebbles before then rinse it after that the fishes got sick so all I did is take the fish out put in a basin with net add salt and good aeration and they get well but not all survive. Thats why I rinsed the pebbles everyday for a week and soaked sorry not simmer wrong word and then add it to the tank then it runs well. I think its not the pebbles which have the poisonous substance since it carries tiny particles which make the water super cloudy sometimes like milk. Maybe that would depends what country and what states you in even tap water dont have the same mineral content in different areas. Thats why if you have a fish which is very well in tap water in NY if you transfer it in New Jersey it still takes time to adjust it is just based on my experience.
: me im from the Philippines dont know about what pebbles do these pet shop sold each shop got different kind and different colors. yup im mean soaked for a week or two and rinsed it with water to drain the tiny particles.

: : Canada, the LFS does not carry pebbles or gravel that carries harmful minerals and must be "simmered" (do you mean soaked??)for a week or two.
: : And, if the rock being used does contain some type of harmful mineral, just keeping it in water for a couple of weeks will not help...if it contains harmful mineral then it should not be used. Period.
: : It sounds like you may be located in a remote area of the world where the standards are very different than "the norm".
: : When we buy aquarium gravel here we need only to rinse well to eliminate pesky dust and dirt....then add to the tank.
: : If a person is using rock out of nature, they can do a fizz test, using vinegar...if it fizzes, you don't use it. Additionally, if a person finds rock out in nature that has streaks or lines of color it is probably a good idea not to use it as it may have mineral deposits that will leech into the water....but our LFS rocks are safe, if it says for aquarium use. If it says "reptile use" then I would not put in an aquarium.
: : : The new added pebbles would be the cause of your problem always allow to simmer the pebbles for a week or two and clean it for a week each day cause some pebbles carries harmful minerals which causes for your koi to hang in the tank this problem not much happen on koi ponds since mostly dont add pebbles while aquarium tank do use pebbles this might be the cause.
: : : : I purchased several Koi for a future pond and kept them in a 5ft tank and they seemed to be doing ok, I came upon an 8 ft tank and decided to give them more space. Since there introducton they have lost their zest and spend most of the day hanging in the centre of the tank. Would it help to warm the water??
: : : : Help.
