I'm sorry for the loss of your wife's crabs... :-(
Could you tell us a bit more about your tank set-up & what size it is/how many crabs? What do you use for substrate, are there sponges in the water dishes, what is the cleaning frequency, and do you have salt-water available for the crabs as well? Is there calcium available in some form, and a variety of foods? I'm sure you already know to declorinate all water going into the tank.
Also need to know what humidity and temps the tank is kept at...and if you have an iso tank for molters or not.
The larger crabs are known for having problems molting, which sounds like what may have happened to at least two of your wife's crabbers. Hanging out in/by the water dish is a good sign of a molt about to happen, which is very stressful for them. Salt-water should be available for *all* crabs, no matter what variety, along with fresh water - the salt mix helps them to retain water for easier shedding of their exos.
Otherwise, without knowing your conditions, I really don't know what it could be...more info is necessary. :-)
