Hi Missy,
Sorry to hear about your female. I don't exactly know what her issue was though. (Been off in the Keys, studying some amazing fish!) So tears are sent your way as I know how difficult it is to lose a fish. You are so dear to put her out of her misery, and it takes a big heart to take that step.

The only thing that comes to mind is that it may have been a tumor or type of cancer, but can't be certain.
