:Generally I see this occuring in my females when they reach about 20 months, so I do believe it is part of an aging process, but can't provide you with any scientific notations regarding this. I have been able to keep colors longer by providing good nutritional variations. Such as feeding brine shrimp 3-5 times a week in between using high vitamin content flakes. And don't forget the frozen green peas every once in awhile as a treat. Maintaining a clean tank also helps a great deal.

The tank is clean, but I think the problem is tail rot. I got to work recently and saw that a co-worker had placed a chinese algae eater (argh!) in my tank just trying to be helpful. It was busy at first, but after a few hours I noticed it attacking my fish. I removed it that day, but not after getting at said guppy's tail a few times. I'm not sure if these few nips were enough to cause a problem but I'm beginning to suspect tail rot. Her tail is seeming to deteriorate and I noticed a large split all the way up to her body yesterday. I have tested my ammonia levels multiple times and all tests have come back normal. As well, there is no evidence of ammonia burns on any of my fish.

I started treatment with melafix and salt yesterday. Here's hoping.
