Generally I see this occuring in my females when they reach about 20 months, so I do believe it is part of an aging process, but can't provide you with any scientific notations regarding this. I have been able to keep colors longer by providing good nutritional variations. Such as feeding brine shrimp 3-5 times a week in between using high vitamin content flakes. And don't forget the frozen green peas every once in awhile as a treat. Maintaining a clean tank also helps a great deal.
