While all good points, one might start a ray in say a 75 galoon tank. Many of the Tea cup rays get rather sizable despite their name. I've read of a P. reticulatus that was 17" across. Now thats a lot of tea! Motoros get bigger.
As for cohabitation with the Chitala knife fish, I've never had any problem with these two together, although I do end up moving the knife out once it starts to get a bit bigger, and might pose some threat to my rays (my male motoro is about 13" now, with the female at around 11", the blue spot at maybe 10") The Chitalas do get large, pretty quickly at that. My largest was a mere 11" back in June, but now measures in at 18" Needless to say, they are in a larger tank now (250) along with a number of other fish started with the rays (tiger shovel noses, peruna cat, arowanas, spotted gars and such)but out grew that particular tank, a wide 100 gallon.
Personally, aside from the requirement of high O2 content, I have yet to find rays particularly sensitive to water conditions. I do water changes at least once a week if not more, of about 20% or more.
