It is not an eel, but a member of the family of primitive fishes, the Polypteridae, and is most closely related to the 'bichirs'....the correct taxon for 'rope eels' is Erpetoichthys calabaricus.
Water should be pH 7.0-8.0, temperature 77ºF-82ºF. Provide plenty of hide spots and plants, and make sure that the tank lid is secure and without even small spaces through which he can wriggle, as rope fish are notorious for escaping tanks.
As far as diet is concerned, they prefer worms....earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, etc, but will usually readily take Mysid shrimps, bits of krill, bits of prawns, pieces of beef heart, and any fish small enough to be swallowed.
