What most people consider "freshwater eels" are considered semi aggressive and get to be about 12" long. They are from the rivers and lakes of africa, primarily, and they eat crustaceans in the wild, as well as small fish. In captivity they eat feeder fish and glass or ghost shrimp, and can be trained to eat dead prey such as krill and cichlid pellets.
Hope that helps a bit, i'm sure others will chime in here with their knowledge!
