I have had some success sinking wood by boiling it and then immediately immersing it in cold water. It usually takes about 3 trys to get it to sink. This has been with much smaller pieces than what you are talking about. 4 foot long pieces may take awhile. You would probably be better off using slate as weight.

: and forget the chemicals and such. scrub it with a brush and then forget it. yes, you can put it away for any number of years and that won't change anything.

: understand though that no matter how long you boil it, it will still probably float for 6 months. that's wood for ya. you'll have to cover it with rocks in your aquarium to sink it, or drill a hole in it and attach it to a piece of slate heavy enough to sink it.
