my tank unless it was stainless steel. The pieces I have seen for sale in the store with screws are stainless.

: If you can drill a small hole through the slate, you could put a wood screw in to hold the wood.
: That's the way that the wood you buy in store holds, and I've been reusing the same piece of slate whenever i change my wood.
