I've used plastic pipe for a variety of reasons in the past without problems. I've always cleaned it well (including removing the ink letters running down the pipe) before using obviously. As mentioned, alot of large tank/filtration systems are plumbed with plastic. To suggest only using stuff bought from a pet store is absurd...the person probably owns shares in his/her local store ;) An example - the gravel I use is a natural coloured gravel I buy from my local building supply store for around $13/50 pound bag. Both lfs's use the exact same gravel in all of their tanks and also sell the stuff for $1.19/lb. Rip off if you ask me...
As for your pleco and hiding spots...never had one that didn't appreciate a dark spot for a "snooze".

:I don't know that he "needs" to hide.. but he sure seems to like to. Right now he wedges himself into a small "cave" made from a slate piece leaning on a rock, coming out moslty at night.
