I don't believe the poster mentioned anything about breeding gouramis, bettas or any other "air breathers". I understand shallow water for the fry of these fish is so that it isn't such a darn long swim for the little guys to get their next "breath". High humidity above the tank water apparently is also important...

:Also, the reason to use the shallow water, from what I understand, is when you are breeding certain varieties of fish. i've read that in the Baensch Atlas' anyways ;). I'm still learning htough. neveer bred fish before....
:If you truely want 12" deep water, do what the previous poster suggested, make a 24" deep tank or just buy one and only fill it only half way. You could make a really cool tank with some driftwood and live plants sticking out of the top of the water. Maybe even flowering plants ;)
