I have had good sucess with green tiger barbs and otocinclus afinis.
never had any problem with nipping on the ottos.

other fish i have had that work with green tigers.
glowlight tetra
gold tetra
green/bronze corydoras (i have a small green cory that chases them around)

dwarf/tourquoise guorami (the barbs think they can nail him but he just starts following them around and they leave him alone)

kuhli loach
zebra and leopard danio
velvet swordtails
molly's
pictus catfish
pleco

fish i have had that get nipped at:
julii corydoras, they go after the black dorsal spot

neon tetras, usually get their fins nipped but seem to deal with it and
grow back after a while, but really wouldnt recommend it.

bulfrog tadpoles as they get larger the barbs tend to nip at the tail.

i wouldnt recommend anything less than a 30gal tank and at least 5 barbs
though.
