Part of it is stress and other factors are food, water pH/dh and lighting. My blue diamonds (when I had dedicated a whole tank to them) used to do the same thing. I've found that depending on the bloodline of these BD's, some will keep an intense blue and others will fade. The best ones I've had were imported from Thailand. Those imported from Germany or Israel seemed to fade quicker. I personally find the turquoise (red & blue)are much nicer, hardier and the colors are more intense.
What is your tank set-up? In my 60 gal., I use only live plants with two reverse-flow undergravel filters two Penguins, one coral life flourescent bulb and one Grolux plant bulb. I add peat moss to my filters which softens the water and helps simulate more of an Amazon environment as well as liquid CO2 diffusers. Twice a week I feed live brine shrimp and I throw in some ghost shrimp in case my huge Pigeon blood decides to go for them.
My tank has 1 Pigeon blood, 1 Marlboro Red, 1 Blue Diamond, 2 Red turquoise and 2 blue turqoise. Other fish include a school of Cardinal tetras, 2 pairs of albino corys, 2 pairs of Rams and 2 pairs of ottos. Plants include about 14 or so Crypts (red & brown ssp.), 4 Anubias (2 different kinds of ssp.), a Nymphea lotus, Hygro, and many A. Crispus bulbs.
Hope I was able to help a little
