7" in a 30 gallon? Personnally I would provide him bigger accommadations.
AND .... do as suggested, with the rocks protecting heater and/or heater guard or purchase a very spendy titanium heater.
:I was wondering if this is common.

:The Dempsey is in a 30 gallon tank with no other fish. He is a little over 4 years old and about 7 inches long.

:The heater is glass type heater that attaches to the side of the tank with suction cups. The fish knock the heater out of the clips that attach to the suction cups, and then he starts banging the glass tube against the glass tank. I'm worried that he is going to break the heater, and electrocute himself.
