When you replace them, either read the labels on each fish in the store before buying, or do an internet search on the species you are most interested in, to see if they get bigger than 2 or 3 inches. If they do, don't get them.
There is really not much you can put in a tank that small, maybe a single male betta, or two females. The smaller fish are either livebearers that will quickly overpopulate your tank, or schooling fish and need to be kept in larger numbers than your tank can house properly.
