Sorry but I have to disagree. Pairing up adult or semi-adult large cichlids requires patience, vigilence and sometimes a divider. How big were the other cichilds? I suspect they weren't sexually mature and therefore not a threat to the female's dominanace. or she was the last one in. The reason she is chasing your male is because this is HER territory now and she is defending it. You could try re-arranging the decor and maybe removing the female while you introduce the male himself for about an hour then they both have to sort out territories and the female won't be so dominant. But be prepared to intervene and remove the harrasser or better still put a divider up, with plenty of hiding places either side, so they can see each other when the want and sort out their differences but still calm down out of the sight of each other.

Because the other cichlids have been removed, re-introducing them might provoke the same reaction and as they may be larger and stronger than her I would not risk it. They may not run away when threatened/chased and you could end up with a messy situation.
