If you use an undergravel filter then it does provide some protection for the glass I guess but not very practical for digging cichlids! I haven't had any problems as long as I had a layer of substrate underneath and it was well packed-in round the sides so big cichlids couldn't move it. You could also silicone it in place to the bottom or to other rocks. You'd be surprized how touch glass is tho, you'd be surprised how many heaters I've had smashed against it my foot-long Plecs and moody Oscars!
