Barbels is the word you're looking for! Do you hoover your substrate regularly? If not this is the most likely cause, dirt in the substrate causing a bacterial infection of the barbels and making them rot. Solution is to hoover your substrate regularly and treat with an anti bacterial medication to stop this infection spreading to their mouths. If it rots their mouths they can suffer permenant damage and not be able to feed, which mean they'd starve to death. It is normally easy enough to cure the barbel loss and these will regenrate if caught early enough. Just be sure to check their mouths for signs of infection or rot. Good luck.
