It is possible one may have killed the other, but very unlikely. One thing you don't mention is nitrate. I'm assuming these are new fish, just added and if so the resident fish will have build-up a tolerance to gradually climbing levels, but the new fish will be stressed by it. How often do you change your water? Were these fish bought locally?

I would test for nitrate, do a partial water change and maybe think about stepping up water changes or adding a nitrate-removing resin to your filter if that turns out to be the problem. Good luck!
